Event: NAIDOC Week 2018

Celebrate NAIDOC Week with a march down the main street to Nyinkka Nyunyu

On: Monday, 9 July 2018

NAIDOC celebrations are held around Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
In Tennant Creek, the annual march will take place on Monday, 9 July, starting from the National Land Council Building (northern end of town) at 9am and finishing at Nyinkka Nyunyu Art & Cultural Centre on Paterson Street, followed by a community gathering from 10am-12noon. There will be a jumping castle, face painting, free raffle/prizes, live music, free BBQ, speeches and awards.
Anyinginyi Sports and Recreation are holding a Family Fun Day on Sunday, 8 July and there's a family movie night at the basketball courts, Purkiss Reserve, on Thursday, 12 July. The film, Bran Nue Dae, will be screened from 7pm-9pm.
Each year, a theme is chosen to reflect the important issues and events for NAIDOC Week and for 2018 the theme is Because of Her, We Can! - NAIDOC Week 2018 will be held nationally from Sunday, 8 July to Sunday, 15 July.
The theme revolves around Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who as pillars of Australian society,  have played – and continue to play - active and significant roles at the community, local, state and national levels.
NAIDOC Week is important to Aboriginal people and indeed to the wider community. It is part of an ongoing reconciliation process celebrated not only in Aboriginal communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.
