Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! There's only a few more days left to nominate an individual or community group for the 2019 Barkly Region Australia Day Awards.

Posted: Tuesday, 27 November 2018

Nominations close on Monday, 3 December 2018.

Proudly supported by Barkly Regional Council and the Australia Day Council NT, the local government awards recognise the exceptional contribution, hard work and determination of citizens who make a positive difference to their community.

People such as Jenny Kitching, who was Citizen of the Year in 2018, inspire everyone through their achievements and challenge us all to make our own contribution to making a better Barkly.

Over the years Jenny has helped countless people in Tennant Creek and remote communities. She has always been there to assist with financial, legal and discriminatory matters, lending a hand with government department applications and a friendly ear and cup of tea when needed.

Jenny is always thinking of ways to benefit the community.

“It was such an honour to be recognised with this award,” she said. “It’s been a wonderful opportunity and I thank my supporters.”

Council Mayor Steve Edgington said it was amazing to see how the dedication and passion of one individual could inspire an entire community.

“The positive differences these individuals make to our community are worthy of celebration,” he said. “It is our hope that these awards not only recognise our unsung community heroes but also inspire others to follow in their footsteps.”

Award categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Community Event of the Year, Sports Person of the Year and Senior Citizen of the Year.

Winners will be decided by a committee of councillors and presented with their awards during the Barkly Regional Council’s Australia Day celebrations on 26 January 2019 at Battery Hill.
