About Barkly Regional council mayor

Sid Vashist is an Indian-Australian who has proudly called Tennant Creek home for nearly 15 years. He first arrived in the Barkly with a deep sense of purpose, and over time, his connection to the region has only grown stronger. It’s also where he met his wife Elly, and together they’re now raising their spirited young son, Victor, who’s already keeping them on their toes at nearly two years old.

Sid’s career has been deeply rooted in service to remote communities. From becoming the youngest elected councillor in the Barkly’s history to chairing the Tennant Creek Local Authority and serving as Director of Corporate Services at Council, Sid has worn many hats – including a stint working with the NT Minister for Local Government. Today, he brings that wealth of experience and passion to his role as Mayor of Barkly Regional Council.

With a degree in Business Management (majoring in Finance and Management), Sid has worked across the board – from retail to NGOs, government, and the private sector. His professional path reflects a strong commitment to practical solutions, sound governance, and a community-first approach.

Driven by a genuine curiosity and a deep love for the Territory, Sid is passionate about empowering young people, supporting local businesses, and helping shape a more vibrant and connected Barkly. As Mayor, he sees his role as both an opportunity and a responsibility – to listen, advocate, and deliver real outcomes for residents across the region.

Sid believes in an open and transparent council – one that’s connected to the community, champions creativity and innovation, and builds strong ties across business, arts, education, and civic life.

And when he’s not in a meeting, at a community event, or chasing his toddler around the backyard, you’ll likely find Sid out on the sports field, enjoying a game under the Territory sun.
